Psych OUT (the queer psychology graduate student's assoc.) is hosting this event in order to create and display departmental solidarity, as well as foster inclusivity and safety for the most marginalized in our community. This event will include small group discussions of what it means to be an ACTIVE bystander and what it means to effectively intervene, as well as a discussion of how to best serve as an ally to People of Color, Muslims, immigrants, refugees, sexual and gender minorities, women, and anyone else who may feel unsafe or be at risk of physical, psychological, or social harm in these divisive times. The event will also give participants the opportunity to craft wearable safety pin creations, which they may choose to wear as a visible sign that they can be turned to as a source of safety, security, and allyship for any of these at risk individuals. Addtionally, particpants will be encouraged to sign action pledges, which will reaffirm their commitment to being an active bystander and ally going forward. Finally, donation jars will be available for particiapnts to donate to an organization that is actively fighting to improve the lives of the individuals that we are gathering to support.
